Sylvamo Aids in Research to Save Endangered Primate

The buffy-tufted marmoset, listed as one of the 25 most endangered primate species in the world by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, has been spotted five times on a Sylvamo-owned forestland reserve since February 2023. The sightings are important for conserving the species and reinforcing the importance of preserving natural lands through quality forest restoration.

Sustainable Sourcing

100% of globally sourced fiber complied with FSC Controlled Wood standard and 63% certified to FSC and/or PEFC standard

The Importance of Responsible Sourcing

As one of the world's largest producers of fiber-based, renewable paper, we play an active role in preventing deforestation, promoting use of responsibly managed forests and supporting markets for certified products. The most direct way we do this is through our Global Fiber Sourcing Policy, which clearly states our unwillingness to accept wood that:

  • is endangered

  • comes from an unknown region or origin

  • has been illegally harvested or acquired

  • threatens high conservation value forests

  • comes from sources that are known to be involved in the violation of human rights including conflict timber, or where indigenous peoples and local communities have not had the opportunity to give or withhold their free, prior and informed consent

  • comes from deforestation or conversion

Goal Targets

Greenhouse Gas Reduction

Reduce our Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 35% and define a pathway to net zero emissions

Reducing GHG Emissions

Our greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal of 35% is relative to a 2019 baseline and consistent with the Paris Climate Agreement. This ambitious goal exceeds our SBTi-approved target for reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 28.1%, which is in line with a trajectory well below 2°C, and absolute Scope 3 emissions by 27.5%.

Water Reduction

25% overall water use reduction and implement context-based water stewardship plans at all mills

Reducing Water Use

Our water reduction goal of 25% is relative to a 2019 baseline and is an intensity goal measured by m³ of influent per ton of product.

We use water throughout the papermaking process, and we return about 95% to the local watershed. The other 5% evaporates during our use or remains as moisture content in our pulp and paper. During the papermaking process, water can be reused up to 10 times before treating and discharging.
