MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a forest, nothing goes to waste. Leaves fall, break down and return nutrients to the soil, helping the next generation of trees and plants grow.
That’s circularity in nature, and the same idea applies to paper.
Paper made from renewable, responsibly sourced fiber is one of the most recycled materials in the world. It can be recovered and reused up to seven times.
Sylvamo can’t make paper without forests. How those forests are managed matters. Supporting sustainable forestry, reducing waste and keeping materials in use all go hand in hand. Together, these actions strengthen the long-term health of forests, communities and the planet.
That’s why packaging is a key focus. It represents an opportunity to further reduce Sylvamo’s environmental impact.
Packaging protects products, gets them where they need to go and supports how customers bring them to market—it’s also an opportunity to reduce waste.
Sylvamo is transitioning to more recyclable materials, partnering across its value chain and working directly with customers to design packaging solutions that reduce waste without compromising performance.
By understanding how customers use its products, Sylvamo develops solutions that support business goals while improving environmental outcomes.
You can see it around the world:
-
Europe – Sylvamo has accelerated its transition away from plastic-based packaging by introducing a fully paper-based solution with a bio-based wrap that can be recycled through standard paper streams, placing it into a packaging material category with the highest recycling rate.
Since 2019, the use of polyethylene plastic-based packaging has decreased 60%, with bio-based coatings now exceeding 66% of Sylvamo’s material mix. This shift reduces reliance on fossil-based materials and keeps fiber in use longer.
-
Latin America – Sylvamo supports circularity through initiatives aligned with Brazil’s National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS). The company partners with Ambipar Response to recycle the same amount of packaging it produces across Brazil rather than sending it to landfills.
The program also strengthens local recycling cooperatives, waste collection associations, as well as jobs and environmental education.
-
North America – Sylvamo partnered with a major retailer to rethink packaging for a line of HP Home & Office Papers from the ground up. Collaborating across sales, operations and manufacturing teams, the company helped design a lidless, bandless box for HP Papers All-In-One Mega Ream paper that eliminated unnecessary materials while improving accessibility and efficiency for in-store handling.
By removing packaging components rather than adding complexity, the redesigned solution reduced waste, lowered environmental impact and supported stronger retail performance. This shows how collaboration and practical innovation deliver benefits for customers and the planet.
Across regions, the approach is consistent: reduce waste, use materials more efficiently and design solutions that work in the real world.
